Biography

Yvon in the Curious Replicas voice-mirror

So, what is the bio of the art?

“Shows on stages, including me sometimes. Environments and installations, designed to entice people to touch voices, to make voices, to feel voices, to see voices, and to invent new vocal bodies, and then to create sensory worlds from their unique sounds. Collaborations across boundaries of theatre, fine art, music, social science, science, and education. Quite a lot of styling: fashion styling, hair styling (though I’m bald!), and voice styling. A pretty queer aesthetic. I’ll link anything to anything if it serves my artistic, my narrative or my social purpose. Sometimes this makes my work ‘ugly’. And often my work troubles easy divides between art, activism, social intervention, and education.”

The rest.

Yvon is Head of the Department of Theatre at University College Cork, Ireland. He has worked to bring artistic practice into direct dialogue with academic research processes, and especially, he has worked to link artistic experiments, voice practice, and queer social interventions with academic teaching, reflection, curriculum development and forms of writing at University level. He strongly believes that universities should be places of professional speculation and experimentation, not just places that churn out ‘well-trained workers’ for (soon to be obsolete) roles in our ever-more-rapidly changing economy. As such, he is very interested in the voices - the leadership - that artists can bring to institutions help disrupt them constructively.
