Hear, the Queer, Appear is a research strand in progress. The project seeks to revisit notions of the actions that queer vocality take in space, to materialise these actions, and to explore the vocal aesthetics that underpin these actions, decanting from concepts I first developed between 2005-2010, but that needed revisiting, updating and new forms of engagement. The first works in the series, all co-made with a hybrid professional and participant ensemble, were part of The Opposite of Queer Trauma project, whose process began in 2024 and continued into 2025. In 2026, three works: The Queer Appear (outdoor light installation); Hear the Queer Appear (outdoor, public space, voice-light promenades); and The Queer Appear, Here (a performance project in The Circus Factory, Cork, Ireland); will be the next manifestations of this strand.
At this time, the intertwined research impulses that underpin these projects are still decanting themselves. Enabling a range of manifestations of the Queer body to sing out in, voice out in, call out in, speak in, storytell in, and simply manifest in public space in unusual ways, underpins these projects. More will be said as these projects evolve.
