People from the LGBTQIA++++ community in Cork choose to be represented in our constellations in public space.
Here, the Queer, Appear is part of the suite of participatory art projects confusingly named Hear the Queer Appear.
These projects were borne of a desire to find three different ways for members of Cork’s Queer community to be represented in public space, without having to put their own bodies on the line. In a time where there is increasing political hostility toward our communities, this particular work celebrates our community’s mass. We twinkle and blink in grouped polyrythms, coming in and out of sync with one another, just like we do in real life. So much in common, yet such a spectrum of difference. Diversity is a strength, and its winking, blinking, beaconing constellation of LGBTQIA++++ people appears, here. We… are. By ticking a simple two boxes on line, participants decided to be represented. To date: 843 persons.
For full information about the project, dates of showings, and what’s next, visit its dedicated website, queerappearcork.com.
Our first pop-up showing was in Bell’s Field, Cork City 17 April 2026 (pictured). Our next showings will be in Bishop Lucey Park, 27 April, 20h to 23h; and at Atlantic Pond, Marina Park, 2 May 2026.
I consider this project to be the sequel to 2024-25’s The Opposite of Queer Trauma. As these projects emerge, more information will appear here.
